Jonathon Rahul Sengupta is a tenor, artist, actor, and pianist from Rochester, New York focused at promoting inclusivity and diversity through performing opera and musical theatre work, as well as telling older and newer stories in a nuanced way. Jonathon has had the honor of professionally exploring opera, musical theatre, and choral work in his career thus far.
A recent Encouragement Award winner of the Laffont Competition at the Metropolitan Opera Capital District, he has portrayed roles with companies like Blackfriars Theatre, Nazareth University Opera, Finger Lakes Opera (FLO), and looks forward to beginning his work with Peabody Institute Opera Theatre this Fall. Other recent credits include his regional theatre debut as Fabrizio Nacarrelli in The Light in the Piazza and ensemble in Sweeney Todd–both at Blackfriars Theatre in his hometown. His undergraduate experience was enriched by his ability to portray both L’Aumonier and Chevalier de la Force in Nazareth University Opera’s Dialogues of the Carmelites, where he received his Bachelors in Music in Vocal Performance with a piano minor. Jonathon is thrilled to be starting his Masters in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy, studying with tenor Barry Banks. Upcoming performances include his portrayal of Abraham Kaplan at the Peabody Institute in their production of Kurt Weill’s Street Scene in November.
